Proposed Legislation Would Knock Tobacco out of the Park in Minnesota

State Representative Mike Freiberg (45B) has introduced legislation that would prohibit the use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes, at Minnesota sports stadiums. This bill continues the momentum of other cities across the country prohibiting tobacco in stadiums under the "Knock Tobacco out of the Park" campaign.

I am pleased that the Food and Drug Administration is finally exercising its authority and regulating all tobacco products including e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah tobacco and pipe tobacco. Not only will the F.D.A. now establish provisions for the manufacturing, importation and retailing of all such tobacco products, but the new regulations will also cover: the pre-market review of the products, requirements to report ingredients and potentially harmful additives in the products, the placement of health warnings on product packaging and oversight of product marketing and advertising.

Jerry Brown signed a sweeping package of tobacco bills into California law on Wednesday, including one that will raise the legal age to buy products from 18 to 21 and another that dramatically tightens restrictions on e-cigarettes. But the governor vetoed a bill that would have permitted cities and counties to establish their own tobacco taxes.

Minnesotans for a Smoke-Free Generation, a coalition of Minnesota’s leading health organizations, has honored Mankato Senator Kathy Sheran for her work to reduce tobacco’s harms for all state residents and save Minnesota kids from a lifetime of addiction to tobacco. Young Mankato-area advocates were there when Senator Sheran received the honor during a Day at the Capitol event in St. Paul on May 3 organized by Minnesotans for a Smoke-Free Generation.
The European Union's top court has approved new rules requiring plain cigarette packs, banning menthol cigarettes and regulating the growing electronic cigarette market

The court said it is OK to ban menthol and other flavorings that make tobacco more appealing. The directive also requires standardized, plain labels that cover at least 65 percent of all cigarette packs with health warnings.

The rules will require warnings for e-cigarettes, limit their nicotine levels to 20 grams and restrict advertising and sponsorship by their makers.
