TCMS Environmental Health Task Force

Posted in Committees

Focus of the Task Force:   The environmental health of our communities has direct and measurable impacts on the health and well-being of our patients.  Positively impacting the social and environmental determinants of health – clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter – must be the focus of local, regional, and national public health efforts.  Furthermore, the evolving impact of climate change via extreme heat events, natural disasters, variable rainfall patterns, and changing patterns of water-borne illness and diseases transmitted through insects, must not be ignored. TCMS has an ethical and strategic imperative to engage in efforts to improve the environmental health of the communities its physician members serve.  The environmental task force is a direct response to this charge.

Charge (approved 10/2017)
  1. Engage in an ongoing and continuous effort to identify efforts, initiatives, programs, and organizations operating within the 7-county metro area that are working within the environmental health context and who would benefit from physician involvement.
  2. As a result of those engagement efforts, develop strategies and action plans to educate and empower our physician members to become better stewards of healthy environments for the benefit of our patients.
  3. Operate as a liaison between organizations working within the area of environmental health within the 7-county metro area and our membership/board.
  4. Periodically report out to our board regarding topics of interest to the task force and/or board members or at the request of the CEO of the Twin Cities Medical Society.
  5. Evaluate environmental health related policy statements, events, etc. for referral to the Board of Directors for consideration of endorsement by the Twin Cities Medical Society.
